ColdFusion Open Source Announcement

This is the third time I’ve started this post and I’ve decided I’m not going to beat around the bush I’m just going to come out and say it.

Digital Positions is currently in the process of open sourcing i3SiteTools

For those who don’t know i3SiteTools is the site management system built by Digital Positions which runs all of our clients’ websites. We don’t call it a content management system because i3SiteTools goes beyond content and encompasses many aspects and tasks involved in running a website.

I’m currently leading this open source movement, and I’m so excited! Since my first day of work I’ve always said we should do this and now after months of planning, talking, and analyzing we are getting close! We recently showed i3SiteTools off to a bunch of developers during an Atlanta ColdFusion User Group meeting and so far the response has been very positive. We’ve taken a handful of these interested developers and are starting to build an alpha / beta test group. Our hope is to have a formal meeting sometime before the end of the year with this group and actually release i3SiteTools nationally during the 1st quarter of 2007.

Before we open the doors for everyone we are have a very controlled release. Right now we’ve only asked developers in the Georgia area to participate in our beta testing. This doesn’t mean that you can’t get involved if you’re interested. We don’t want to turn anyone away. If you are interested leave a comment or email us at support AT d-p DOT com and we’ll be in touch.

There is a lot of work to get done. We have some code clean up to do, some features to work out, an installer to tighten up (we plan to do a full web- based installer, so you’ll just upload and walk through a web wizard to install) and so much more. We’ve already had a few internal meetings and things are staying on track. I’ve been given the green light to use this blog as one of the ways we get information out (and hopefully build a buzz!).

Along with us going open source, Digital Positions will also be launching a new corporate website and a website for i3SiteTools, as well. We’re also contemplating a name change for the toolset, so if you have ideas we’d love to hear them! And, yes, there will be a ‘bounty’ if the name you suggest is selected!

Stay tuned for more information and progress reports in the upcoming weeks.
